for the Hela Huli People and the Tari Region

by Dr. Chris Ballard, Australian National University

INTRODUCTION

The work of compiling this bibliography was started in 1989, as part of my doctoral research on the history of Huli-speaking communities of the Tari region of Southern Highlands Province. I was soon surprised, both by the amount of research work that had been done in the Tari region and by the fact that very few of the results of this research were known or available to Huli people themselves. This bibliography is thus an attempt to list as much as possible of what has been written by or about Huli people and about the Tari region. In conjunction with the Tari Research Unit of the Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research, copies of most of these references are now available for consultation in the Unit’s library at Tari. I would be happy to receive notice of any references missing from this bibliography, or queries about the availability of any materials listed here.

Coverage, Sources and Availability

Certain sorts of material have not been included here. No attempt has been made to cover the large number of newspaper reports on events relating to Huli people or the Tari area (with the exception of some rare, early references to the Huli in English and Australian newspapers). Only the more significant of the very many translations to Huli of portions of the Bible are included here. Patrol reports and other colonial administration or national and provincial government documents relating to the Tari region and Huli-speaking area will be covered in a separate bibliography. Similarly, separate lists are being developed which cover the relevant audiovisual (film and sound) materials.

The major sources within Papua New Guinea for much of the material listed in this bibliography were the libraries of the Tari Research Unit in Tari, the Evangelical Church of Papua New Guinea Headquarters at Halengoali near Tari, the Southern Highlands Archive Resource Centre in Mendi, the Papua New Guinea National Archives in Waigani and the New Guinea Collection in the University of Papua New Guinea’s Michael Somare Library. The two major external sources consulted were the Australian National University library and the National Library of Australia, both located in Canberra, Australia. The District Office at Tari formerly held a significant collection of writing on the region; unfortunately this building, together with all of its contents, was destroyed by fire in July 1987.

Copies of all of the published and unpublished materials referred to here should be contained in the Michael Somare Library at the University of Papua New Guinea, or at the library of the Tari Research Unit.

Conventions and Abbreviations

Items prefixed by an asterisk () have not been viewed by me and the accuracy of the reference or the relevance to Huli people or the Tari region cannot therefore be guaranteed. Where they are known, full Christian names are given for authors, even where they do not appear as such in the original reference. References to papers in edited volumes or collections that are listed elsewhere in this bibliography refer to the editor’s name for the full volume reference; a paper in a volume edited by Aletta Biersack will thus be listed as “In Aletta Biersack (ed.)”, and the full reference to the volume will appear under “Biersack, Aletta (ed.)”.
